FIFA garnered more than 500 million ticket applications for the 2026 World Cup, yet concerns over safety and political instability in the United States are prompting cancellations among international supporters.
FIFA claims the world still desires the World Cup, yet signs of trouble are emerging.
On Wednesday, FIFA announced it had received over 500 million requests for tickets to the 2026 World Cup, despite growing concerns about exorbitant prices, safety issues, and political instability in the United States.
Applications flooded in from all 211 FIFA member nations, with demand highest outside of the host countries coming from Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Colombia.
The most desired game? Colombia faces Portugal in Miami on June 27, then Mexico plays South Korea in Guadalajara, with the final taking place in New Jersey on July 19.
“Over half a billion ticket requests in slightly more than a month reflects more than just demand — it’s a worldwide declaration,” stated FIFA president Gianni Infantino, acknowledging that the organization “cannot accommodate every fan in the stadiums.”
However, beneath the prominent figures, discomfort is increasing.
Excitement vs Fear: The Growing Divide Among 2026 World Cup Fans
As per Roya News reports, approximately 16,800 fans opted out of the ticket process overnight, following rising boycott calls that are quickly gaining traction on social media.
FIFA’s stringent no-refund policy suggests that the amount probably indicates fans withdrawing from Phase Three sales, which encompass lottery applications and purchases by member associations
International supporters have raised issues regarding personal safety, law enforcement, and political unrest while visiting the US. For many, the turning point seems to have been a deadly ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis, igniting concerns about civil disorder and aggressive policing during the tournament.
What was intended to be a worldwide football festivity is becoming more overshadowed by worry.
The 2026 World Cup will be memorable—48 teams involved and the inaugural event co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, rather than unfiltered excitement, numerous fans from Europe, South America, and Africa are now stating they are rethinking their travel plans entirely.
In reaction, FIFA has arranged an urgent meeting this week with top officials and event organisers. Discussions are anticipated to emphasize spectator safety, waning ticket pledges, and the potential damage to reputation confronting the largest World Cup ever.
