UIDAI Aadhaar card:-The UIDAI has taken steps to maintain the integrity of the Aadhaar database by turning off the Aadhaar numbers of people who have died. New programs have been put in place to stop abuse and make data more accurate. For example, the myAadhaar portal now has a death reporting function. Kerala has 4,09,68,282 Aadhaar cards compared to a population of 3,60,63,000, which is more than 49 lakh more than most states, according to a UIDAI RTI response.
UIDAI Aadhaar Card Data Raises Questions in Kerala
Reports say that Kerala is in a strange scenario where there are more Aadhaar registrations than people residing in the state.
UIDAI Aadhaar card:-The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said in an RTI answer that as of September 30, 2025, 4,09,68,282 Aadhaar cards have been issued. This is more than 49 lakh more than the state’s total population of 3,60,63,000 Aadhaar cards. This type of fluctuation is seen in many other states, however Kerala has a bigger difference.
This anomaly draws attention to a serious problem with the unique identification system’s data hygiene. “The absence of a systematic mechanism to promptly cancel or deactivate the Aadhaar of deceased individuals is a primary contributing factor to this disparity,” stated Raju Vazhakala, an RTI activist based in Kochi.
UIDAI Aadhaar card:-A comprehensive, required, and seamless system is still awaited, despite recent UIDAI efforts to integrate with death registration data and launch a reporting portal. Raju noted that the gap allows for possible fraud and misuse of the deceased’s identity documents, requiring immediate policy action to guarantee data security and accuracy
When considering the entire nation, the Aadhaar count actually surpasses the population. In India, more than 1.42 crore Aadhaar cards were issued, compared to the country’s population of over 1.41 crore. In addition to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal also exhibit this peculiarity.
UIDAI Aadhaar card:-The UIDAI is taking steps to protect the accuracy of the Aadhaar database and avoid identity theft by turning off the Aadhaar numbers of people who have died. Working with the Registrar General of India (RGI), which has made available over 1.55 crore death records from 24 states and Union Territories through the Civil Registration System (CRS), is a significant step.
More than 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been successfully deactivated after validation. According to a statement, a comparable exercise is being conducted for states and UTs that are not part of the CRS.
On June 9, 2025, UIDAI also introduced the new “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” service on the myAadhaar portal. Using the deceased’s Aadhaar and Death Registration Number, family members can report a death for later validation and deactivation.
It further stated that after obtaining the official death certificate, residents are strongly encouraged to report the death of family members on the myAadhaar Portal.
In order to confirm the status of centenarians, UIDAI is also looking into working with state governments and obtaining death records from banks.
