Michael Carrick is in advanced discussions to take over as Manchester United’s caretaker head coach following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, and Solskjaer has also been interviewed.
Old Trafford might soon be seeing the return of another well-known figure.
Various sources indicate that ex-Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is leading the race to become caretaker head coach, as the club seeks stability after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
According to Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic, it is thought that United has spoken with both Carrick and Solskjaer amid the ambiguity surrounding Darren Fletcher’s interim leadership.
Club officials are keen to finalize an appointment before players resume training on Wednesday, with an announcement anticipated within the next 48 hour.
A Solskjaer return would be touching — yet contentious. The Norwegian initially became interim manager in 2018 following José Mourinho’s firing, eventually securing the position permanently before being dismissed himself in 2021.
Carrick then took charge momentarily, managing three unbeaten matches before giving way to Ralf Rangnick
Michael Carrick Leads Race for Manchester United Interim Manager Role
At 44, Carrick is reported to be in deep negotiations with United. He has been unemployed since departing from Middlesbrough last June, after leading them to the Championship play-offs in 2022–23 before just falling short in consecutive seasons.
Although Carrick has less managerial experience than Solskjaer, his thorough knowledge of the club works to his advantage. He played 464 matches for United, secured several titles during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, and subsequently worked as a first-team coach under both Mourinho and Solskjaer.
Fletcher’s time seems to be concluding following a draw against Burnley and an FA Cup elimination by Brighton, causing United to seek stability before Saturday’s derby match with Manchester City.
