Why Did WNBA–WNBPA CBA Talks Break Down?

WNBA and WNBPA initiate a moratorium after not reaching an agreement on a new CBA, pausing free agency and expansion initiatives due to disagreements over salary cap proposals and revenue sharing.

WNBA Free Agency Explained: Why Everything Is Suddenly Frozen?

The WNBA offseason has come to a halt.

The league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) have reached an agreement to pause league operations, including free agency, after not finalizing a new collective bargaining agreement by the previous week’s deadline.

Discussions had been prolonged twice since the conclusion of the 2025 season, but with the CBA officially ending at midnight ET on Friday, negotiations have come to a standstill.

Although both parties have entered a temporary “status quo” phase — upholding the existing working conditions — the new moratorium prohibits teams from making qualifying offers, applying core designations, or signing free agents.

What Is the Core Disagreement in the WNBA CBA Talks?

At the center of the stalemate is finance.

Players are seeking a groundbreaking CBA that mirrors the league’s swift expansion. The WNBPA has advocated for a genuine revenue-sharing system, suggesting that athletes obtain 30% of total revenue with a salary cap near $10.5 million. The league allegedly dismissed that framework, labeling it unviable financially.

The WNBA’s alternative proposal would allocate 50–70% of net revenue to players, whereas the union prefers guarantees based on gross revenue instead. Within the league’s structure, average salaries would surge from about $120,000 to $530,000, and maximum salaries could leap from $249,244 to $1.3 million right away, possibly approaching $2 million by the contract’s conclusion. The salary cap would begin at $5 million and increase alongside revenue.

However, the definitions of “revenue,” clarity regarding expenditures, and increasing skepticism continue to be significant obstacles

The timing is unfortunately poor. Portland and Toronto’s expansion drafts, along with free agency and the college draft, are all crammed into a more condensed offseason.

In its three-decade history, the WNBA has never been defeated in games due to a labor dispute. However, as time runs out, the stress is only growing stronger.
