The Premier League is reportedly preparing to change how it promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion, moving away from player-worn symbols and towards league-controlled visibility. According to a report by The Athletic, the league is considering replacing rainbow armbands and apparel with a pride-themed match ball, alongside enhanced stadium and broadcast branding.
The shift reflects an attempt to refocus attention on inclusion itself, after repeated controversies involving players who have declined to wear rainbow symbols in recent seasons.
A Subtle Shift in Strategy, Not in Commitment
Premier League officials are said to be reviewing initiatives that place responsibility on individual players, particularly team captains. Under the proposed approach, players would no longer be asked to wear rainbow armbands, laces, or warm-up tops during Pride-related fixtures.
Instead, visibility would come through elements fully controlled by the league — including stadium displays, LED advertising boards, broadcast graphics, and potentially the official match ball. The reasoning is straightforward: while players can refuse to wear symbols, they cannot refuse to play with the ball.
Importantly, the league maintains that this change does not signal a reduced commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion, but rather a recalibration of how that message is delivered.
Player Objections Have Dominated Recent Campaigns
Over the past few seasons, Pride initiatives in English football have frequently been overshadowed by individual objections, often framed around personal or religious beliefs. Rather than amplifying messages of inclusion, these incidents have shifted public debate toward player refusals and disciplinary responses.
Last season alone saw several high-profile flashpoints. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi was reprimanded for adding a religious message to his rainbow armband, while Ipswich Town’s Sam Morsy opted out of wearing Pride symbols altogether. Manchester United also abandoned a planned pre-match initiative to avoid singling out Noussair Mazraoui, who had expressed discomfort with the campaign.

According to the report, Premier League executives believe shifting Pride messaging to collective, league-controlled platforms could prevent future controversies from eclipsing the campaign’s intent.
