Why Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 Matches Will Stay In India?

T20 World Cup 2026: Based on the information available, the ICC has instructed Bangladesh to either compete in their matches in India or lose points.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has allegedly denied Bangladesh’s appeal to relocate their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 games from India. On Sunday (January 4), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released a statement indicating that it has officially asked the ICC to move their Group C matches for the upcoming mega-event in India featuring the shortest format. However, as per a report from ESPNCricinfo on Tuesday night (January 6), the ICC has turned down BCB’s request.

‘Play In India Or Lose Points’: ICC’s Firm Message To Bangladesh

According to the available details, during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, the ICC informed BCB that their request to host T20 World Cup 2026 matches outside India is being denied due to security issues.

As per ESPNCricinfo, the ICC has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that “Bangladesh must head to India to participate in the T20 World Cup or face losing points.”

Nonetheless, according to the same report, the BCB asserted that no such ultimatum has been communicated to them by the governing body.

Bangladesh is set to compete in all four of their Group C matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, which will take place in India. The first three group games against West Indies (February 7), Italy (February 9), and Italy (February 14) are planned at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, while their fourth and last group match against Nepal on February 17 will take place in Mumbai

How Did The Mustafizur Rahman IPL Episode Escalate Tensions?

Bangladesh’s appeal to relocate their T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India occurred a day after the BCCI told Kolkata Knight Riders to free Bangladeshi left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 team.

Rahman, the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in T20Is with over 400 dismissals in T20 matches, was acquired by the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise for Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 auction on December 16 in Abu Dhabi.

However, the franchise’s choice to acquire him drew significant backlash for Shah Rukh Khan in recent weeks following several reported incidents of crime against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Significantly, Mustafizur, who has earlier participated in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals, was the sole Bangladeshi cricketer acquired in the IPL 2026 auction
