Vijay’s Jana Nayagan was initially set to premiere on January 9 but was delayed because of certification problems.
In a significant setback for actor Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming movie Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court on Tuesday overturned a single judge’s ruling that had instructed the censor board to provide a certificate for the film. The choice has postponed the debut of the eagerly awaited film, which was supposed to arrive in cinemas earlier this month.
Is Jana Nayagan Delayed Again? Here’s The Latest Update
For those unfamiliar, Jana Nayagan, billed as Vijay’s last movie before he fully enters politics, was initially scheduled for a global theatrical release on January 9, just before the Pongal festival. Days prior to its release, the Central Board of Film Certification notified production house KVN Productions that the film was sent to a revising committee due to a complaint.
Opposing the decision, the film’s producers subsequently sought intervention from the Madras High Court, which initially sided with them, instructing the censor board to issue a U/A certificate for the film once the recommended changes were made.
The censor board contested the High Court’s ruling by submitting an appeal, leading a division bench of the Madras High Court to suspend the single judge’s order that instructed the board to issue the certificate. The bench subsequently scheduled the case for a hearing on January 21.
Subsequently, KVN Productions approached the Supreme Court, which began hearing the case on January 15. The Supreme Court, however, rejected the petition, declining to provide an urgent hearing and instructing the producers to seek their resolution at the Madras High Court instead.
Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, stars an ensemble cast that includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The movie has been extensively promoted as Vijay’s last appearance in cinema before he fully dives into politics, heightening the excitement about its release.
