Michael Carrick has been officially appointed as the new interim manager for Manchester United, as the Red Devils strive to achieve Champions League qualification.
The quiet has been lifted: Michael Carrick is now appointed as the interim manager for Manchester United through the season’s conclusion.
What Is Manchester United’s League Position Under Carrick’s Appointment?
The 44-year-old club icon, who secured 12 significant titles during a dazzling 12-year playing career at Old Trafford, joins United while they are in seventh place in the Premier League — as the Red Devils aim to return to the Champions League.
“Carrick stated that it is an honour to have the responsibility of leading Manchester United.” “There’s still much to strive for this season.”
Carrick’s initial challenge could scarcely be more difficult: a derby clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
United are only three points away from fourth-ranked Liverpool and one point behind fifth-ranked Brentford, with a top-five position probably sufficient for Champions League football due to England’s robust European coefficient.
This isn’t Carrick’s initial experience with the role. He remained undefeated in three games as interim manager in 2021, guiding victories over Villarreal and Arsenal prior to transferring control to Ralf Rangnick.
Following his departure from United’s coaching staff, Carrick became the head coach at Middlesbrough in 2022, leading them to the Championship play-offs in his initial season before just falling short in the next two seasons. He was let go last June after Boro ranked 10th.
Why Manchester United Trust Carrick During a Crucial Run-In?
United’s management thinks Carrick’s profound knowledge of the club — gained from 464 appearances, several league titles, and a Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson — provides the stable guidance required during the final stretch.
The 44-year-old will be aided by individuals such as Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, and Craig Mawson, whereas Darren Fletcher will continue as the head coach for the Under-18s.
Carrick has returned to the place where it all started, with a clear goal: stabilize the team, win the derby, and restore United’s status among Europe’s elite.
